The movie is already one of the most looked-forward-to movies in recent times, given that it is by Christopher Nolan. The figurehead of his grand, big-screen adaptation of the old epic poem of Homer, “The Odyssey”, arrives in cinema halls on July 17, 2026. The following is all you need to know.
What the Film Is About

The Odyssey is a tale of Odysseus, king of Ithaca, who is involved in a ten-year voyage back home in the aftermath of the Trojan War. Nolan has modified the poem by Homer himself, developing the screenplay directly, starting to work on it in March 2024. In December the same year, Universal Pictures officially announced the project.
Matt Damon is Star of The Cast

Matt Damon stars as Odysseus. In February 2025, Universal announced he would be cast in the film along with a photo of him in battle armour. Variety led the coverage, indicating that the role meant Damon had to put up with some of the most physically demanding of his career in numerous foreign locations.
Zendaya Plays a Goddess

Zendaya plays the role of Athena, the goddess of wisdom and war. Athena is the fierce protector of Odysseus in his voyage in Homer’s poem of Homer. The casting was verified with Universal and covered by People magazine before the beginning of the main shooting.
An Extraordinary Ensemble

Tom Holland is the son of Odysseus, called Telemachus. Anne Hathaway plays the role of Penelope, his best wife. Robert Pattinson is a scheming suitor, Antinous. Charlize Theron plays the character of Circe. Other actors include Lupita Nyong’o, Jon Bernthal, John Leguizamo, Elliot Page and Mia Goth.
The Director And Staff

Hoyte van Hoytema, long-time cinematographer of Nolan, comes back and collaborates with him since Interstellar to Dunkirk, Tenet, and Oppenheimer. The music was composed by Ludwig Gorgason, who scored Oppenheimer. The film has Jennifer Lame as its editor.
All Shot On IMAX Film

The first movie to be shot with all IMAX 70mm cameras is the Odyssey. In the GQ, two million or more feet of IMAX film were consumed in 91 days of principal photography. According to Variety, IMAX opening weekend tickets were sold out near instantly, a very rare feat with any film.
A $250 Million Production

The movie is reported to have a budget of 250 million, thus it is the most costly movie of Nolan’s career. The number was initially announced by Deadline. It easily outdoes Tenet and The Dark Knight Rises, which were $ 200 million and 250 million, respectively.
Shot in Seven Countries

The main shooting was from February to August 2025 in Greece, Morocco, Italy, Scotland, Iceland, Western Sahara, and the US. The Castle of Santa Caterina on the island of Favignana, Sicily and the Moray Firth in northeast Scotland were important sites.
Nolan’s Post-Oppenheimer Return

Oppenheimer raked in 976million dollars worldwide and received the Academy Award for Best Picture and Best Director. It is the first feature that Nolan released after that historic release. Variety also reported that there is already a high demand for tickets to open-night screenings, which has left the AMC site in shambles.
Why It Matters

Nolan explained to GQ that adapting Homer had to provide the audience with all the set-up that was accessible to the ancient audience. What it has created is a movie that is designed to be viewed on as large a screen as possible, that narrates a story that is almost three millennia old.
