No one thought that a small-town cotton dealer in 1960s Bombay would emerge as the largest Indian scripted success on Amazon Prime Video in the last two years. It is what Matka King specifically pulled off, however, and now the streaming giant has officially greenlit Season 2.
Big Renewal News

After only a month of the release of Season 1, Prime Video already renewed Matka King to create Season 2. Deadline reported the decision, following the series being the most-watched brand new scripted show in India on the platform in two years.
What Is Matka King

The Matka King is a drama period crime fiction film written and directed by Nagraj Popatrao Manjule and Abhay Koranne, and is set in bondage in Bombay in the 1960s. It is then followed by Brij Bhatti, a humble cotton trader who, by accident, stumbles upon a criminal betting game called Matka and gradually develops a deadly underground kingdom not through the use of violence, but with money.
Based on a True-Life Story

The show is based directly on the life story of Ratan Khatri, the person who thought of and popularised the Matka gambling system in post-independence Bombay. That realistic historical foundation affords the show a more gritty and grounded credibility that fictional crime dramas typically lack.
Vijay Varma Heads The Cast

Throughout the eight episodes, Vijay Varma, as Brij Bhatti, is exemplary in his restraint and precision when it comes to emotions. His performance was much acclaimed by critics, with India Today declaring it merely as Simply Vijay Varma winning big – a career-best performance by an actor who had a track record of Darlings and IC 814.
An Awesome Supporting Cast

Sai Tamhankar is Barkha Bhatti, who gives the show a touch of emotion. The protagonist in Kritika Kamra is Gulrukh, and Gulshan Grover is Lalji Bhai, a vintage bad man who is a feared figure in gambling. The ensemble cast is impressive as well, with Sidharth Jadhav, Jamie Lever, and Girish Kulkarni.
Birthday Surprise Introduction

The premiere date was no coincidence. Episodes Aired on April 17, 2026 – Vijay Varma’s 40th birthday – all eight episodes were released together. The show had first been announced on his own birthday, as well; the opening was a truly personal and heartwarming event in the life of the head star.
Critics Responded Warmly

Matka King now has an 8.0 out of 10 rating on IMDb and a 75 percent on Rotten Tomatoes. The Hindu simply called it a warning story that yields bountiful beginnings, and critics never stopped complimenting the period production design in the 1960s.
Topped 17 Territories

Matka King, as well, topped the charts in 17 territories of Prime Video in its opening month outside of India. Such a global spread of an Indian language series highlights how resonant the show was with viewers who were way beyond their domestic viewer base.
Season 2 Plot Details

It has been confirmed that Season 2 is now in development. It is unclear what the plot will entail, but the season one finale already heavily foreshadows that the gambling empire of Brij Bhatti will continue to be threatened by more and more dangerous political and criminal forces in the subsequent episodes.
