The race for the 2026 Emmy Awards is starting to sort of take shape, as critics, industry observers, and awards analysts all identify which shows are really building the strongest momentum. Even though nominations are not out yet, a few series are coming up again and again as steady contenders across drama, comedy, and limited series categories. They’re getting noticed for performances, smart writing, and some wider cultural ripple effects. Here are the leading contenders heading into Emmy season, according to the Entertainment Weekly Emmy predictions.
The Diplomat (Netflix)

Netflix’s The Diplomat still feels like a solid Emmy contender, mostly because it mixes political strategy with real international tensions, plus a lot of character-driven storytelling. It’s led by Keri Russell, and the whole thing basically centers on a U.S. diplomat who has to deal with all sorts of knotty global issues, while also juggling the personal side along with professional duties.
A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms (HBO)

Set in the world of George R.R. Martin’s Westeros, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms looks at events that happen a good chunk of decades before where Game of Thrones starts. The whole thing follows Ser Duncan the Tall, and also his young squire Egg, as they journey around the Seven Kingdoms.
Paradise (Hulu)

Paradise really strings together political intrigue, mystery, and suspense, all while the whole story plays out inside this sort of odd, tightly controlled community. For awhile the series just kept getting people talking, mostly because the storytelling is layered, and there are these unexpected twists that you don’t see coming.
The Pitt (HBO Max)

Set inside a busy emergency department, The Pitt gives you a rather realistic look at the kinds of problems healthcare professionals run into. Each episode covers one whole hour of a hospital shift, so it stays fast-paced and kinda immersive to watch.
Pluribus (Apple TV+)

Created by Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul creator Vince Gilligan, Pluribus is among the most anticipated new dramas of 2026. While many story details remain closely guarded, the project has attracted attention because of Gilligan’s reputation for character-driven storytelling and acclaimed television work.
Slow Horses (Apple TV+)

Apple TV+’s Slow Horses continues building momentum with its blend of espionage, humor, and character-driven drama. The series follows a group of intelligence officers assigned to a less prestigious division of British intelligence. Gary Oldman’s performance remains one of the show’s major strengths.
Stranger Things (Netflix)

The final season of Stranger Things marks the conclusion of one of Netflix’s most successful original series, which comes with a mix of supernatural mysteries and a bit of science fiction. Honestly, it has turned into one of the most expected web series of the year, with people watching with intense energy and vibe.
Task (HBO)

Created by Brad Ingelsby, the writer of Mare of Easttown, Task is basically about an FBI agent digging into a streak of brutal robberies that were done by a band of everyday citizens. It’s a crime drama, and a lot more, that has generated buzz for the award.
