Netflix has just dropped something really exciting. “The Boroughs” is an unofficially viewed eight-part sci-fi series that was executive produced by the Duffer Brothers and garnered 35 million hours of viewership in only three days of release. That right there is surely no slow burn at all.
The Big Numbers

Netflix releases weekly viewership statistics, establishing itself as a leader in respect to transparency in the industry. The most recent data is between May 18 and May 24. The Boroughs premiered on May 21, i.e., all 35 million hours watched were in three days of streaming on the platform.
Only Three Days

It is the second TV show to debut in the world’s top 2 in its first week of release on Netflix. It had debuted midweek and was able to surpass most of the other shows that had seven days to amass their audience and momentum on the platform.
Who Made It

“The Boroughs” were created and showrun by Jeffrey Addiss and Will Matthews. The two had worked with each other before in The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance. The Netflix series, The Upside Down Pictures production banner, produced by Matt and Ross Duffer as executive producers, is a nine-episode series.
The Duffer Connection

The Duffer Brothers are most famously known to have created Stranger Things, the platform-defining Netflix sensation that lasted five adored seasons. “The Boroughs” celebrated its third straight month of executive producer credit in 2026, an impressive and prolific creative output to say the least.
A Busy Three Months

The Duffers have been involved in March supporting a horror series, Something Very Bad Is Going to Happen, by Haley Z. Boston. In April, the animated spin-off Stranger Things: Tales from ’85 was released. In May, “The Boroughs” came to the platform and made the three.
What It Is About

The show is set in a retirement community that appears to be a utopian village in New Mexico that brings together a grieving newcomer to the community who lives with a misfit group of older and unlikely heroes. They discover a sinister supernatural secret together that their golden years are much more deadly than they ever thought.
The Cast List

Leading the ensemble cast are Alfred Molina, Geena Davis, Alfre Woodard, Bill Pullman, Clarke Peters, and Jena Malone. Denis O’Hare, Ed Begley Jr., Jane Kaczmarek, and Rafael Casal are in important key supporting roles throughout the eight episodes of the series.
Critical Reception

“The Boroughs” has a score of 97% in Rotten Tomatoes. Greer Riddell of Collider complimented the series, saying that it stood well by its own merit and did not fall into the trap of copying the Stranger Things formula, but that the series should be evaluated on its own terms.
Other than Stranger Things.

Whereas Stranger Things focused on teenage characters, trying to overcome supernatural forces in a small town in Indiana, The Boroughs is moving all the attention to the retirees in New Mexico. The series is compared to Steven Spielberg’s sci-fi classics and the suburban horror fiction of Stephen King.
What Comes Next

Every week, Netflix reinvents its weekly viewership charts after every seven days. Having barely three days clocked in the current report, The Boroughs has already established itself very well on the platform. The release of next week’s official figures will be under scrutiny by industry watchers as well as those who view such performances.
