There is no better man for a comeback than Diljit Dosanjh. He is reuniting with director Imtiaz Ali for Main Vaapas Aaunga, which will be released in theatres on June 12, 2026. This is their second collaboration with Variety, confirming that this is the case after the hugely acclaimed Amar Singh Chamkila, which took Netflix by storm globally.

As the title implies: I Will Return. Main Vaapas Aaunga is a period romantic drama, in which love, longing, and a sense of belonging meet, a sense of belonging that never quite lets go. According to The Hollywood Reporter, it is a rich exploration of the unfulfilled romance and generational wound.

There aren’t many filmmakers who put their heart on the screen as much as Imtiaz Ali. Ali admits that the more he films in Punjab, the more he feels attached emotionally, as he co-wrote the script for the movie. The main Vaapas Aaunga is his most personal performance to date.

What a lineup. The film stars Diljit Dosanjh, Naseeruddin Shah, Vedang Raina and Sharvari under the same roof. IMDb has confirmed that the film was made by Applause Entertainment, Birla Studios and Window Seat Films, and the shooting was completed in a focused five-month period and ended in December 2025.

In the role of an ailing elderly man slowly piecing together the story of his past, Naseeruddin Shah acts the part. Collider says the trailer makes it clear that Shah is the heart of the film, whose central love story plays out in a “heartbreaking Partition-era” with Diljit remaining “silent, yet in the know.
AR Rahman’s Music
AR Rahman, Irshad Kamil and Imtiaz Ali in a room, it’s magic each time. According to Variety, their song Kya Kamaal Hai is a blend of Rahman’s trademark layered acoustic sounds and Diljit’s Punjabi pop charm, which makes it so much more.
Two Timeline Narrative
It’s a perfect blend of old and new. IMDb confirms that the film is set in the current time frame of Diljit’s character, and the story of Vedang Raina and Sharvari’s heart-wrenching romance completes the package. Producer Ektaa Kapoor highlighted that Vedang was the top performer, and it’s not hard to understand why.

Sharvari and Vedang Raina shoulder the film’s younger time frame and, by all accounts, do a fabulous job. Ektaa Kapoor hailed Sharvari’s dazzling presence while calling Vedang the irresistibly charming sardarji. Pre-release hype surrounding both is already quite high, the Hollywood Reporter reports.

Main Vaapas Aaunga is a Bollywood movie that’s surely the most poignant release of the month of June; thanks to its story, music and, of course, cast that’s all strong. Variety’s initial review states that “this is an unforgettable cinematic experience”, and that’s about right.
