As a youngster in the 2000s and 2010s in India, I enjoyed some of the most explosive sports coverage possible on TV channels such as Cartoon Network, Hungama, Sonic, and Animax. These shows were quite dramatic and made sports such as football, racing, and spinning tops into intense and dramatic battles, keeping us on the edge of our seats.
Beyblade
Tyson, Kai, Ray, and Max transformed a playground game into an exciting and stadium-shattering sport, with mythical Bit-Beasts such as Dragoon and Dranzer battling for supremacy.
Inazuma Eleven
We saw Endou Mamoru (Mark Evans) assemble a group of underdogs that didn’t play a simple ball game; they called up massive elemental walls, fire dragons, and literally gods to score a single goal.
Supa Strikas
Stylish African cartoon which picked up the torch of Shakes, El Matador, and Dancing Rasta and went around the world in a techno training bus. Facing weird opponents such as the Iron Tank bot.
Idaten Jump
Idaten Jump made all Indian kids want to wear helmets, obtain a mountain bike, and jump off a ramp. Sho Yamato and his special flame Kaiser mountain bike.
Scan2Go
This high-speed game featured space exploration and slot-car racing. Kazuya and his friends competed in miniaturized, motorized cars on huge galactic circuits, using special cards to unleash bursts of cosmic energy and push their toy cars to the finish line.
Galactik Football
In a future galaxy, the Snow Kids team got to know how to tap into something magical—the “Flux”—a magical, glowing source of energy found only on their home planet, to participate in a high-stakes football game in a zero-gravity environment.
Slam Dunk
For many Indian kids who only knew about cricket and football, Hanamichi Sakuragi and the Shohoku High team introduced us to the fast-paced, high-flying world of basketball.
Initial D
Animax’s late-night viewing helped to raise the consciousness of the older kids to Takumi Fujiwara, a quiet delivery boy whose Toyota AE86 is a street racing legend.
Prince of Tennis
But young tennis star Ryoma Echizen entered Seigaku Academy to break away from the shadow of his famous father. The show was a very dramatic example of the game of tennis, with signature, physics-defying moves.
The Battle of the Planets (G-Force)
Anime like Takarazuka Review, Soul Hacker, and Rancho featured Hindi-language voice-overs and introduced us to high-stakes races, roller-skating battles, and aerial sports that were far ahead of their time.
