While Hollywood’s most important season is still on the horizon, summer is the time when it brings together blockbuster franchises, family favorites, and crowd-pleasing adventures. In fact, since 2016, several films have had a significant influence on record-breaking ticket sales and global audience numbers. The movies were used to set the tone of each of their respective summers and also to some of the box office successes in the industry.
Top Gun: Maverick (2022)

The film managed to win the hearts of a lot of people. That nostalgic vibe, along with those aerial action scenes and even simple word of mouth, did its job, in a way, and the sequel ended up being one of the biggest theatrical hits of the decade, basically a summer 2022 defining picture too.

Marvel’s huge crossover event kinda pulled in characters from all over the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The sheer size, the emotional weight, and the franchise momentum of the movie made it feel like one of the biggest films of its era, plus a proper box office summer blaster.
The Lion King (2019)

It caused a lot of interest around the whole world with Disney’s reworking of the animated classic. The cast of familiar faces, sophisticated graphics, and family-friendly nature helped make one of the biggest hits of 2019.
Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021)

Released outside of the summer window, its consistent theatrical impact helped to build momentum for the rest of the theatrical season and helped usher in the blockbuster experience phenomenon that was propelled by its arrival and helped power other theatrical seasons throughout Hollywood.
Incredibles 2 (2018)

After a long hiatus between the movies, Pixar’s superhero family came back. The sequel garnered both loyal fans and new audiences and was among the best animated films to open as part of the summer blockbuster schedule.

Released a bit before the middle of the period, Finding Dory certainly did not stop shaping Hollywood’s take on family blockbusters. Its box office success proved the enduring appeal of popular animated series during busy movie seasons.

The pairings of two characters who are popular among fans led to one of the most anticipated superhero events in recent years. The film was well received by audiences and highly recognized as a franchise, which aided in the positioning of the film as a major summer film.
