OTT’s moment of dark comedy is at its peak yet. Whether it’s a dysfunctional family or a historical spoof, streaming services have brought us some smart, star-studded offerings that will have audiences rolling on the floor laughing and choking at the same time. Here are all the shows you can’t afford to miss.
The Bear Returns

One of TV’s most lauded satires is bidding adieu. Bear Season 5, which premieres June 25 on FX and Hulu, is the last ride for Jeremy Allen White, Ayo Edebiri, and Ebon Moss-Bachrach. Variety has confirmed 21 Emmy wins, and the actress is Jamie Lee Curtis, a favourite at this year’s festival.
Hacks Bows Out

This is one of the few comedies to land successfully. Hacks closed its run April 9 on HBO Max, as Jean Smart and Hannah Einbinder were at their keenest. It was rescued from fake-death headlines by Deborah Vance and named the comedy of the decade by The Hollywood Reporter.
Apple’s Dark Gem

Sadly, Apple TV+ lost one of the all-time best watches of 2026 with “Maximum Pleasure Guaranteed”, which launched May 20. Tatiana Maslany stars as a fact-checker who gets embroiled in murder and blackmail. It was written by David J. Rosen and directed by David Gordon Green, and features Jake Johnson as a co-star.
Margo’s Wild Ride

Margo’s Got Money Troubles was a complete surprise. The Apple TV+ series launched on April 15 with an astounding 96% on Rotten Tomatoes. Elle Fanning is a broke college dropout mom who is raising a baby with Michelle Pfeiffer, Nicole Kidman, and Nick Offerman in A24 and David E. Kelley’s film.
Larry David’s History Lesson

Larry David is back with half of Hollywood. Life, Larry and the Pursuit of Unhappiness premieres on HBO June 26, in seven episodes in which Bill Hader portrays Lincoln and Jerry Seinfeld is Lewis and Clark, written by Barack and Michelle Obama’s Higher Ground.
Emmy Pedigree Galore

This trophy case is a whopper! The Bear has won 21 Emmy awards, and Hacks has won Outstanding Comedy Series more than once. Each boasts an extensive pedigree, of which each of these three-Tatiana Maslany, Elle Fanning, and Nicole Kidman-makes the most of.
Streaming Dominance

2026 is the year of dark comedy on the streaming front. Netflix, Hulu, HBO Max, and Apple TV+ are all contending with marquee-monster offerings at the same time. There’s no coincidence in the overlap, Deadline said, as platforms are riding high on an audience starving for a darker, more interesting narrative.
Why Dark Comedy Wins

There is healing power in laughter in life’s worst moments. Dark humor allows the authors to cover loss, accidents, and mess-ups while still keeping the audience on its feet. The Hollywood Reporter reports that the format continues to best traditional sitcoms come Emmy season, and 2026 is no exception.
Breakout Performances

The performances should be in the limelight of their own. But Ayo Edebiri is one of the most sought-after actors today after The Bear. Lots of heads are turning toward Elle Fanning’s film, which Variety dubs her best work, and Hannah Einbinder’s comedic timing in Hacks continues to draw raves.
What to Watch First

New to the genre? Begin with Margo’s Got Money Troubles -warm, funny, and right away engrossing. The Bear is the payoff for five seasons that has been promising a gut punch. There’s more to Maximum Pleasure Guaranteed than meets the eye, and for all of you Curb Your Enthusiasm fans, it’s a show you can’t afford to miss.
